Wood Turning By John
My father bought a 1967 Shop Smith VII 7-in-1 tool (scroll down this page to the 1960 Mark VII for a picture).
I have the Shop Smith now (since about 1995) and have turned some stuff (shown in approximate date order - oldest to newest).
First work involved repairs for Jeanne's Workshop.

Straight sided "paper clip" cup.
Wood is Maple - firewood.
3" tall, 2 1/4" diameter, 3/32" wall thickness.
Turned on screw chuck.

Curved sided "paper clip" cup.
Wood is Cherry - firewood.
2 3/4" tall, 2 1/4" diameter, 1/32" wall thickness at rim, 1 1/4" depth.
Turned on screw chuck. (Some tear rout on base - top surface.)

Candle stick.
Wood used in base bowl is unknown softwood - very light.
Actual candle holder is commercial turned - purchased maple part glued to bowl.
1" tall bowl, ~ 4" diameter, 3/16" wall thickness.

Shallow, very thin-sided bowl.
Wood is Cherry - air dried, sawn timber from Clint's Cranberry property.
4 1/8" diameter.
Less than 1/32" thick at rim, to maybe 1/4" at rim for jam chuck on bottom to ~ 1/32" at center.
There are now two cracks bottom of the bowl.
Daily use as coffee cup coaster.

Beautiful aged Cherry, my prettiest piece so far.
Shallow, thin-sided bowl.
Wood is Cherry - air dried, sawn timber from Clint's Cranberry property.
4 5/8" diameter.
1/16" thick at rim, to maybe 1/4" at rim for jam chuck on bottom to ~ 1/16" at center.
Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane clear gloss (as I remember).
Daily use as coffee cup coaster.
There was a break in the turning activity to about 12/2012. (Think of the pieces above as my "early period".)

4 1/4" diameter, 1" tall.
5/16" thick at rim, to maybe 3/8" at rim for jam chuck on bottom to ~ 1/4" at center.
Minwax Water Based Polycrylic clear semi gloss - not recommended.

Medium depth, nearly vertical side, medium-thick-sided bowl.
Wood is Southern Pine - two layers of left over stair tread, Titebond glued.
3 7/8" diameter, 1 3/8" deep, 1 7/8" tall.
3/16" thick at rim, to maybe 3/8" at rim for jam chuck on bottom to ~ 1/4" at center.
Liberty Paint - Old Finisher's Paste Varnish & Glaze

Jam chuck mounted on screw chuck to head stock.

Jam chuck with finished
piece shown. Screw chuck used to hold base to hollow and form
basic shape. Jam chuck to reverse piece and finish bottom to
slight concave.

Wood is Hard Maple - left over from a job many years ago.
2 3/4" tall, 2 " diameter, 1/32" wall thickness at rim, 1 1/4" depth.
